You don't have to starve yourself to lose weight. By not eating enough calories your body will go into what's called "survival mode", where it will begin to lose muscle during a starvation period. So while you do lose some body weight, the majority of it is muscle and water, not the stubborn fat.
By losing muscle during this process you are simply slowing down your metabolism and increasing the likelihood that you will put on all the weight again and more, when you begin the inevitable yo-yo diet.
The key to effective weight loss is healthy eating combined with exercises which not only burn calories (cardio) but also include muscle toning movements (strength) which increase your lean muscle tone.
The more muscle you have the faster your metabolism, the less muscle you have the slower your metabolism.
